Founding Farmers Review...

The Gardener and I joined our good friends Holay and Dr. French for a Saturday night out this weekend...Holay and I have been talking about checking out Founding Farmers for months now...and tonight was the night...

I wanted to love it...look at this menu...it's right up Mr Q's alley...from walking in the door it's a great atmosphere...wonderful lighting (SO important!!), professional and knowledgeable staff and overall a great vibe...

We started out with some drinks and appetizers...the bacon-wrapped dates ($9), and popcorn of the day - (kettle-corn in our case - $2), and skillet corn bread ($5) were all good...not great but good...we didn't know it at the time, but the appetizers provided some foreshadowing for the rest of our meal...

Dr. French hadn't had a prime rib ($28) in ages and decided to go for the 14 oz big piece of meat...unfortunately he found it a little tough and considered it "fair"...which for Dr. French isn't great, because he usually is very enthusiastic when he enjoys a meal!!
Holay went for the Roasted Chicken Salad ($13)...didn't exactly show up on the "bed of greens" she was expecting...but overall she found it enjoyable...could have used "something" though...
The Gardener had the most interesting looking dish at the table...the Steak and Enchilada Skirt Steak ($19)...he liked all of it, but enjoyed the enchiladas the most....the corn on the cob with cheese intrigued all of us...the Gardener found it "ok"...

As for Mr Q, he went for the Southern Pan Fried Chicken with Waffles ($16)...yikes! No fat grams there! The chicken was crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, the mac & cheese (yes, because the waffles with "cream gravy" wasn't enough!) was really good, broccoli was well-cooked, and the waffles...although slightly cold by the time they got to the table made for a nice dessert within an entree...cream gravy was odd at first, but there wasn't a bite left on this plate when I waddled away from the table...

Dr. French was probably the least happy with his meal, but we all felt each of our meals could have used a little "ummph"...I'm sure a professional food critic could describe what was missing better than "ummph", but...everything was "good" to "just ok", but nothing WOWED us...which was unfortunate because we really want to like this place...

Final word - we'll try it again...next time we're going to go for brunch...as Holay said, it might be a case of exploring their menu and finding the best dishes...oh yeah, and I can't vouch for it myself but I do trust Holay and she thoroughly enjoyed the mirrors in the Ladies Room and Mr Q recommends the cool hand dryers in the men's room...

After dinner, we watched "The Dark Knight"...I know I'm slow...but here's a quick review...
Heath WAS very good as the Joker...not sure if its Oscar-worthy good but he was definitely the best part of the movie...Mr Q found the plot and action sequences crazy-convoluted and the entire film could have used some serious editing...and someone should give Batman a throat lozenge...oh, and I agree with Holay that that level of violence doesn't belong in a PG-13 movie...

Great photos, Mr. Q! I think those really captured the high quality presentation of each dish. I was so determined to like the food better that I went back this past Monday night. Same report as Saturday night though-good food, not great food. I think we will hit big when we go for brunch-I am almost sure of it!
