Saturday Night Eats - Commissary

Mr Q, the Gardener, AJ and Chartreusy headed out to try the (old Merkado) new Commissary last night on P Street...

The Gardener and I tried to get in last week but didn't feel like dealing with a 45 minute wait...last night was a more reasonable 20 minute wait and luckily there was room at the bar so we waited with some $3.50 Bud Lights...once seated, AJ jumpstarted the table conversation with the usual "Anyone want to get some appetizers??!!"

The waiter recommended the chicken nachos ($11) and Chartreusy had his heart set on some dumplings ($7.50) so we did both...nachos were OK, nothing to write home about (or on your blog for that matter)...the dumplings were tasty but you only got four of them which seemed kind of lame...yeah those are the dumplings below but they look like chicken wings don't they??

For dinner, I went all vegetarian (ala Holay and Mr. French) and ordered the Roasted Vegetable platter with Baked Potato ($10)...veggies were delicious and its hard to screw up a baked potato so I was happy with my meal...and fyi if you're a vegetarian they seem to have a decent amount of options for you here....

The Gardener ordered the Chicken Stew ($11) and wasn't all that excited about it...it was much more "soup-like" than "stew-like"...shouldn't stews be thick with big chunks of meat and vegetables in it? The Gardener won't be ordering it again...not that it was bad...just wasn't a hearty stew!

AJ was filled with anticipation over the chicken kebobs with yellow rice ($12)...unfortunately AJ was disappointed once he got his meal...not much chicken and he thought the rice was from the bottom of the pan...kind of overcooked and dried up...like it had been back in the kitchen for a while...thumbs down on the chicken kebob...

Chartreusy was extremely pleased with his fish and chips ($13) but would have enjoyed a third item to provide a contrast in tastes...there was lots o' fish but he found the french fries and fried fish all a little too much of "one taste"...I'm not really sure what that means either but that's what he said so I'm repeating it here...but he did say he liked it which I guess is the important thing...fish and chips - thumbs up from Chartreusy!

No dessert this time around but they did have what appeared to be some fun and fattening choices on there...although I'm not sure why anyone would want to pay $1.50 for a popsicle...

Overall, Commissary's a mixed bag at this point...something weird about the vibe/interior I can't put my finger on....it's like the management can't decide whether it still wants to be a "nicer" restaurant or a casual "neighborhood diner type" establishment so its trying to be both which doesn't really work...

I'd vote for turning up the lights a little and going even more casual...and get rid of those silly desks/tables in the middle of the dining room...

Final verdict - we would all try it again...
we'll check back in a month and see if Commissary has found its identity...
